Best Urdu fonts for MS Word, Google Docs and websites (and how to install Jameel Noori Nastaleeq)
Which Urdu font to pick for a school notice, a Google Doc or a WordPress blog, where each one legally comes from, and how to fix boxes, broken letters and clipped lines.
Short answer
For MS Word on Windows, Jameel Noori Nastaleeq is the most familiar choice, and the built-in Urdu Typesetting font is a safe free alternative. For Google Docs, use Noto Nastaliq Urdu (Nastaliq) or Noto Naskh Arabic (Naskh), because Docs cannot use fonts you install yourself. For websites, use Noto Nastaliq Urdu from Google Fonts with a line-height of about 2 to 2.3.
To install Jameel Noori Nastaleeq, right-click the .ttf file, choose Install for all users, then restart Word.
Nastaliq vs Naskh: the two Urdu styles
Every Urdu font belongs to one of two families. Nastaliq is the hanging, diagonal style used by Urdu newspapers, books and wedding cards. Each word slopes down from right to left, and letters stack on top of each other. Naskh is the flatter style you see in the Quran and in most Arabic text. It sits on a straight baseline, like Latin type.
Urdu readers in Pakistan expect Nastaliq for anything they read properly. Naskh stays clear at small sizes, so it suits menus, forms and captions.
Nastaliq · Noto Nastaliq Urdu. The word drops diagonally and needs tall line spacing.
Naskh · Noto Naskh Arabic. The same letters sit flat on one baseline.
| Point | Nastaliq | Naskh |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Diagonal, calligraphic, stacked letters | Horizontal, even, simple joins |
| Reader expectation in Pakistan | Standard for Urdu books, news and notices | Feels "Arabic" to many Urdu readers |
| Line height needed | High: about 2 to 2.4 on the web | Normal: about 1.6 to 1.8 |
| Small sizes (under 14px) | Dots and joins blur | Stays readable |
| Best uses | Articles, notices, poetry, print | Menus, buttons, forms, tables, captions |

How to install Jameel Noori Nastaleeq on Windows
These steps work for any .ttf or .otf Urdu font. We don't link a Jameel Noori download because we found no official one, and many "free font" sites bundle adware. Get the file from someone you trust and scan it first.
- Close Word. It reads the font list only at startup.
- Unzip the download and find the file ending in .ttf.
- Right-click the file and choose Install for all users (on Windows 11, under Show more options). Some programs only see fonts installed for all users.
- Check it installed in Settings > Personalization > Fonts. Type "Jameel" in the search box.
- Open Word and type "Jameel Noori Nastaleeq" into the font box.
Free alternative: turn on Urdu Typesetting
On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Optional features, select View features next to "Add an optional feature", tick Arabic Script Supplemental Fonts, then select Next and Add. Windows 10 has it under Optional features > Add a feature. You must be online. Microsoft's steps are on its missing fonts page.
Android and iPhone: what you can and can't do
iPhone and iPad: since iOS 11 (September 2017), Apple shows Urdu, including its Urdu keyboard, in Nastaliq. You can't replace the system font, though apps like Pages can use fonts added through a font app.
Android: most phones still display Urdu in a Naskh-style system font; Samsung users were still requesting a built-in Nastaliq in 2024. You can't change the Urdu system font without the maker's support or rooting, which we don't recommend.
So a Word file set in Jameel Noori will often open in a fallback font on a phone. For WhatsApp groups, send a PDF: it carries the font shapes inside, so every phone sees the same Nastaliq.
Set up Urdu fonts in MS Word properly
Word stores two fonts for all text: a Latin font and a Complex scripts font, which Urdu uses. That is why picking Jameel Noori in the normal font box sometimes changes nothing.
- Add Urdu as an editing language in File > Options > Language. The right-to-left buttons only appear after this.
- Add the Urdu keyboard in Windows. Our guide on how to type in Urdu covers the phonetic layout.
- Set the complex script font. Press Ctrl+D and, under Complex scripts, choose Jameel Noori Nastaleeq or Urdu Typesetting.
- Make it the default with Set As Default if you write Urdu most days.
- Set direction with the Right-to-left button in Home > Paragraph.
- Use Single or Multiple line spacing. "Exactly" cuts off the tall tops and deep tails of Nastaliq.
Ms Sana, a teacher at the made-up "Namoona Public School", needs a parent-teacher meeting notice for Saturday 31 October 2026.
- Page: A4, 2 cm margins. Complex scripts font: Jameel Noori Nastaleeq, 16 pt.
- Direction: click Right-to-left on the Home tab. Line spacing: Multiple 1.15.
- Heading: school name, centred, 26 pt. Jameel Noori has no true bold, so use size, not Word's fake bold.
- Sub-heading: "اطلاعِ عام" at 20 pt with a thin bottom border.
- Body: 16 pt, with dates in Urdu digits (۳۱).
- Save as PDF and check it on a phone before sharing.
Preview set in Noto Nastaliq Urdu, since this page can't legally embed Jameel Noori. In Word the shapes will look slightly heavier.
If the notice exists as an old InPage file, convert it with the InPage to Unicode converter and paste the result into Word. See how to convert an InPage file to MS Word.
Urdu fonts in Google Docs
Google Docs only offers fonts from Google's own library. It can't use Jameel Noori or any font installed on your computer, and has no upload button.
- Turn on right-to-left controls. On the Google Docs home screen, open the menu, go to Settings, tick "Always show right-to-left controls" and click OK.
- Add the font. Open the font menu, choose More fonts, and search for "Noto Nastaliq Urdu". You can also filter by Arabic script to see every font that covers Urdu letters.
- Apply it. Select your text, pick the font and set line spacing to 1.5 or more.
The Docs font list doesn't always show every family from fonts.google.com, so search for the exact name. If you download as .docx, the reader's PC needs the same font, or Word substitutes another.
Urdu fonts on WordPress websites
On a website the font file is served to every visitor, so its licence matters most. Noto Nastaliq Urdu on Google Fonts uses the SIL Open Font Licence, so you can link to Google or self-host. Jameel Noori has no published web licence.
Three CSS settings decide whether Urdu looks right:
- line-height: below about 2.0, Nastaliq tails touch the next line or get clipped. Use 2.1 to 2.3.
- font-display:
swapshows a fallback font first, then switches. Nastaliq files are heavy, so expect a small jump; a fixed line-height limits it. - letter-spacing: themes often add it to headings, which breaks Urdu joins. Reset it to 0.
- Language: for an all-Urdu site, set Settings > General > Site Language to Urdu. WordPress then loads the theme's right-to-left styles. For a mixed site, keep English and use the
.urduclass below on Urdu blocks. - Load the font: paste the
<link>lines into your theme's header code box. - Add CSS: paste the rules into Appearance > Customize > Additional CSS (or the Site Editor's Additional CSS on block themes).
- Mark Urdu content: on a block, open Advanced and add
urduin "Additional CSS class(es)". Or setlang="ur" dir="rtl"in a Custom HTML block. - Test on a phone for clipped tails.
<!-- 1. In the site header --> <link rel="preconnect" href="https://fonts.googleapis.com"> <link rel="preconnect" href="https://fonts.gstatic.com" crossorigin> <link href="https://fonts.googleapis.com/css2?family=Noto+Nastaliq+Urdu:wght@400;700&display=swap" rel="stylesheet"> /* 2. Additional CSS */ .urdu, :lang(ur) { font-family: 'Noto Nastaliq Urdu', 'Urdu Typesetting', serif; direction: rtl; text-align: right; font-size: 1.15em; /* Nastaliq looks small at the same px */ line-height: 2.2; /* room for tall letters and deep tails */ letter-spacing: 0 !important; /* spacing breaks joins */ text-transform: none; overflow: visible; } .urdu h1, .urdu h2, .urdu h3 { line-height: 1.9; font-weight: 700; } /* Naskh for small interface text */ .urdu .wp-block-button, .urdu figcaption, .urdu table { font-family: 'Noto Naskh Arabic', serif; line-height: 1.7; }
English stays in your theme font while every block marked Urdu switches to Nastaliq. If you write in Roman Urdu, the Roman Urdu to Urdu converter turns "aap kaise hain" into proper Urdu script that you can paste straight into a block.
Print vs screen
For print, Nastaliq wins. Body text at 14 to 16 pt reads well on A4. Send the press a PDF so their computer can't swap your font. If you must share a .docx, turn on File > Options > Save > Embed fonts in the file, though some fonts block embedding.
On screens, small Nastaliq is harder: dots and short joins merge on low-resolution phones. Keep Nastaliq body text at 18px or more and use Naskh for captions and table cells. In dark mode, try weight 500 so thin strokes don't fade.
Common problems and how to fix them
Boxes instead of letters (tofu)
The device's font lacks that character. Install the font, or add fallbacks to the stack (Noto Nastaliq Urdu, Urdu Typesetting, serif).
Letters not joining
Usually theme letter-spacing, or legacy InPage text. Reset spacing to 0 and convert old text to Unicode first.
Wrong letter shapes
Arabic keyboards type Arabic ي (U+064A), ك (U+0643) and ه (U+0647) instead of Urdu ی (U+06CC), ک (U+06A9) and ہ (U+06C1). They shape differently in Nastaliq and break search. Use an Urdu keyboard, or clean the text with our Urdu text cleaner.
Wrong numerals
Urdu digits are ۰۱۲۳۴۵۶۷۸۹ (U+06F0 to U+06F9). Arabic digits ٠١٢٣٤٥٦٧٨٩ (U+0660 to U+0669) differ for 4, 5 and 6. If Word keeps showing the wrong set, check the Numeral option under File > Options > Advanced.
Clipped tops and tails
In Word, "Exactly" line spacing is the cause. On websites, a low line-height or overflow:hidden on a heading wrapper. Raise line-height and let the text overflow.
Font changes on another PC
The other computer doesn't have your font. Send a PDF, or switch to Urdu Typesetting, which every Windows 10 and 11 PC can add for free.
Have text in the wrong format?
Fonts only work on real Unicode Urdu. Convert Roman Urdu or old InPage text first, then apply any font from this guide.

Which Urdu font is best for MS Word?

Why doesn't my Urdu font change when I select it in Word?
Word keeps a separate Complex scripts font for Urdu. Press Ctrl+D and set the font in the Complex scripts section, not just the main font box.

No. Google Docs only offers fonts from Google's library and has no upload option. Use Noto Nastaliq Urdu instead.
