How to use the Roman Urdu converter
- Type or paste your Roman Urdu in the left box. Full sentences work best, because the tool handles each word separately and keeps your punctuation.
- Check the Urdu output on the right. It updates while you type and shows the text in Nastaliq, the style most Pakistani readers expect.
- Fix any word directly in the Urdu box if needed. Names and rare words are spelled by sound, so a quick correction is sometimes needed.
- Copy or download. The output is standard Unicode Urdu, so it pastes cleanly into WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram captions, Word, Google Docs and InPage 3 or newer.
How the converter reads your Roman Urdu
Roman Urdu has no fixed spelling. One person writes bohat, another writes bahut or bht, and all three mean بہت. A letter-by-letter swap gets these wrong, so the converter works in two layers:
- A word list first. Hundreds of everyday words, with their popular spelling variations, are mapped to their correct Urdu spelling. This covers greetings, pronouns, verbs like karna, jana and dekhna, numbers, days and common religious phrases.
- Sound rules second. Any word not in the list is spelled by sound. Pairs such as kh, gh, sh, ch, bh and ph become one Urdu letter or a letter with ھ, long vowels like aa, ee and oo become ا, ی and و, and a word ending in -ain or -on gets a noon ghunna ں.
Short vowels (zabar, zer, pesh) are not written in normal Urdu, so the tool leaves them out, just as a newspaper or book would.

Why convert Roman Urdu into Urdu script?
Roman Urdu is fast to type on an English keyboard, but it is hard to read in long messages and easy to misread. Urdu script fixes that, and there are practical reasons to use it:
- Readability. Older family members, many teachers and most print readers are far more comfortable with Urdu script than with English letters.
- Formal writing. School assignments, office notices, shop banners and invitation cards usually need proper Urdu, not Roman.
- Search and social media. Unicode Urdu is real text, so Google, YouTube and Facebook can read and index it. An image of Urdu text cannot be searched.
- No Urdu keyboard needed. You can write Urdu on any laptop or phone without installing a phonetic keyboard or learning a new layout.
Common Roman Urdu words and their Urdu spelling
| Roman Urdu | Urdu | Roman Urdu | Urdu |
|---|---|---|---|
| shukriya | شکریہ | zaroor / zarur | ضرور |
| theek / thik | ٹھیک | bohat / bahut | بہت |
| kyun / kyon | کیوں | kyunke / kyunki | کیونکہ |
| chahiye | چاہیے | mubarak | مبارک |
| inshallah | ان شاء اللہ | mashallah | ماشاء اللہ |
What the tool cannot do perfectly
Being clear about limits saves you time. Some Roman spellings stand for more than one Urdu word. Kal can mean yesterday or tomorrow, which is fine because both are کل, but khana could be کھانا (food) or خانہ (a box or column). The converter picks the more common meaning. Arabic-origin words that use ع, ص, ط or ذ also cannot be guessed from sound alone unless they are in the word list.
For anything you plan to print or publish, read the Urdu once before sharing. Then run it through our Urdu text cleaner to fix spacing and punctuation in one go.
Frequently asked questions
Is this Roman Urdu to Urdu converter free?
Yes. It is completely free, there is no sign-up, and there is no limit on how much text you convert.
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser with JavaScript. Your text is not uploaded to our server or stored after you close the page.
Can I paste the Urdu output into WhatsApp or MS Word?
Yes. The output is standard Unicode Urdu, which works in WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, MS Word, Google Docs and InPage 3 or later. If Word shows it in a plain font, select the text and choose an Urdu font such as Jameel Noori Nastaleeq or Urdu Typesetting.
Why is one of my words spelled wrong?
The word was probably not in the built-in list, so it was spelled by sound. Edit it directly in the Urdu box. Using capital T, D and R for ٹ, ڈ and ڑ, and writing long vowels as aa, ee or oo, also improves accuracy.
Does it work on mobile phones?
Yes. The tool works in Chrome, Safari and other modern mobile browsers. The Urdu text shows in Nastaliq once the font loads.
Can it convert Urdu script back to Roman Urdu?
Not at the moment. This page converts Roman Urdu into Urdu script only.
