Common problems in copied Urdu text

Urdu text often looks fine on screen but behaves badly once you search it, count it or set it in a nice font. These are the issues this cleaner fixes, and why each one matters.

Arabic letters that look like Urdu letters

Arabic and Urdu share a script, but some letters have separate codes. Text typed on an Arabic keyboard, or copied from some PDFs, uses Arabic ي (yeh) and ك (kaf) instead of Urdu ی and ک. They look almost the same in many fonts, but to a computer they are different letters. That breaks search: a reader searching for پاکستان will not find پاكستان written with Arabic kaf. In Nastaliq fonts the Arabic letters may also show dots in the wrong place.

English punctuation in Urdu sentences

When people type Urdu on a phone, they often use the English comma, question mark and full stop. Urdu has its own marks: ، (comma), ؟ (question mark), ؛ (semicolon) and ۔ (full stop, called khatma). Using them makes text look professional and lets tools such as our Urdu word counter detect sentences properly. The cleaner only changes punctuation that touches Urdu text, so URLs, decimals like 2.5 and English words stay untouched.

Double spaces and spaces before punctuation

Justified layouts and copy-paste from PDFs leave double spaces and spaces before ۔ or ؟. In print these create ugly gaps, and on the web they can push a full stop onto its own line.

Invisible characters

Zero-width spaces, direction marks and byte order marks cannot be seen but can break word counts, search and copy-paste into design software. The cleaner removes them. It keeps the zero-width non-joiner, which Urdu writers use on purpose to stop two letters joining.

How to clean Urdu text

  1. Paste your text into the left box. The cleaned version appears on the right straight away.
  2. Choose your fixes. The recommended ones are ticked. Turn on Remove aerab only for plain prose, never for Quranic verses or poetry that relies on the marks.
  3. Pick a digit style if you want all numbers in Urdu (۱۲۳) or English (123) digits.
  4. Check the change list under the boxes to see exactly what was fixed, then copy the clean text.

Who needs an Urdu text formatter

  • Website owners and bloggers publishing Urdu posts, so that Google search and site search match every word.
  • Composers and designers placing Urdu in InPage, Photoshop, Canva or Illustrator, where stray characters cause broken joins.
  • Teachers and students preparing clean papers and assignments.
  • Translators and editors receiving text from many sources in different typing styles.

Converting from an old InPage file? Run it through the InPage to Unicode converter first, then clean it here. Working with English text instead? Use the format cleaner, or read our guide on removing extra spaces from text.

A note on the Arabic heh (ه) fix

Urdu uses ہ (gol heh) where Arabic uses ه. Changing it is right for almost all Urdu text. If your text includes Arabic quotations that should keep the Arabic letter, untick Fix Arabic letters before cleaning that part. Character details for every Urdu and Arabic letter are listed in the official Unicode Arabic block chart.

Frequently asked questions

Will the cleaner change the meaning of my text?

No. It only changes letter codes, punctuation, spacing and hidden characters. Words stay the same. Removing aerab is optional and off by default.

Does it change English words or links inside Urdu text?

No. Punctuation is only converted where it sits next to Urdu letters, so English sentences, web addresses and decimal numbers are left alone.

Why should I replace Arabic ي and ك with Urdu letters?

They are different characters to a computer. Mixing them breaks search, sorting and spell check, and can show the wrong letter shape in Nastaliq fonts.

Is my text stored anywhere?

No. All cleaning happens inside your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Can I clean very long documents?

Yes. The tool handles long articles and book chapters. For very large files, clean them in parts if your phone or browser slows down.
