How to Type in Urdu on Your Phone and Computer

You do not need special software to write proper Urdu. Every modern phone and computer can type Urdu once the right keyboard is switched on, and if you would rather not learn a new layout, you can type in Roman Urdu and convert it. Here are five practical ways, from the quickest to the most professional.

Which method suits you?
  • Occasional Urdu, no setup: type Roman Urdu and convert it (Method 1).
  • Daily chatting on the phone: add the Urdu keyboard on Android or iPhone (Methods 2 and 3).
  • Long documents and office work: add Urdu to Windows or Mac (Methods 4 and 5).

Method 1: type in Roman Urdu and convert it

This is the fastest route if you already chat in Roman Urdu. Type the way you normally text, for example aap kaise hain, and a converter turns it into آپ کیسے ہیں. Nothing needs installing, and it works on any phone or laptop with a browser.

  • Best for: WhatsApp messages, captions, short notes, people who do not know the Urdu keyboard layout.
  • Limits: rare words and names may need a small correction, because Roman Urdu has no fixed spelling.

Method 2: Android phones (Gboard)

Most Android phones come with Gboard, Google's keyboard. Menu names can differ slightly between phone brands and versions, but the steps are close to this:

  1. Open any app where you can type, tap the text box, then tap the gear icon on the keyboard (or open Gboard from your phone's settings).
  2. Go to Languages → Add keyboard and search for Urdu.
  3. Pick the layout you prefer and tap Done.
  4. While typing, press the globe icon or long-press the space bar to switch between English and Urdu.

Google's own help page, Type in a different language, shows the current steps for your version. Gboard also offers voice typing; after switching to Urdu, tap the microphone and speak to see if Urdu voice input is available on your phone.

Method 3: iPhone and iPad

  1. Open Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards.
  2. Tap Add New Keyboard and choose Urdu.
  3. In any app, tap the globe icon on the keyboard to switch to Urdu.

Method 4: Windows laptop or PC

  1. Open Settings → Time & language → Language & region (on Windows 10: Time & Language → Language).
  2. Click Add a language, search for Urdu and install it.
  3. Press Windows key + Space to switch between English and Urdu while typing.

The standard Windows Urdu layout places letters differently from an English keyboard, so it takes some practice. Many Urdu typists prefer a phonetic layout, where ب is on B, س is on S, and so on. Phonetic Urdu layouts have been published by Pakistani language institutions such as the Center for Language Engineering at UET Lahore. Install only from the official source.

For text in Word, also set a Nastaliq font such as Jameel Noori Nastaleeq. Our guide on moving InPage text into MS Word covers font and right-to-left settings in detail.

Method 5: Mac

  1. Open System Settings → Keyboard and find Input Sources.
  2. Click Edit, then +, and add Urdu.
  3. Switch input from the menu bar icon, or with the keyboard shortcut shown in the same settings.

Tips for clean, professional Urdu text

  • Use Urdu punctuation: ۔ instead of a dot, ، instead of a comma, ؟ instead of a question mark. Our guide to Urdu punctuation marks shows each one.
  • Avoid Arabic letter look-alikes. Some keyboards produce Arabic ي and ك instead of Urdu ی and ک. They break search on websites. The Urdu text cleaner fixes them in one click.
  • Pick a Nastaliq font for documents and designs. Plain Naskh fonts are readable, but most Pakistani readers find Nastaliq more natural.
