SGPA vs CGPA
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) measures your performance in one semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) combines all semesters completed so far. Most Indian universities that follow the UGC choice-based credit system grade on a 10-point scale, so both usually sit between 0 and 10.
SGPA to CGPA formula
The accurate method weights each semester by its credits, because a 26-credit semester counts for more than a 20-credit one:
CGPA = Σ (SGPA × credits of that semester) ÷ Σ credits
If every semester has the same credits, or your university says to use a plain average, the formula becomes:
CGPA = (SGPA₁ + SGPA₂ + … + SGPAₙ) ÷ n
Worked example
| Semester | SGPA | Credits | SGPA × credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 7.8 | 20 | 156.0 |
| 2 | 8.2 | 22 | 180.4 |
| 3 | 8.6 | 24 | 206.4 |
| 4 | 8.0 | 24 | 192.0 |
| Total | 90 | 734.8 |
CGPA = 734.8 ÷ 90 = 8.16. A simple average of the same four SGPAs gives 8.15, close here, but the gap grows when credits differ more between semesters.
How SGPA itself is calculated
Each subject's letter grade carries grade points, and SGPA is the credit-weighted average of those points for one semester:
SGPA = Σ (grade points × subject credits) ÷ Σ subject credits
Under the UGC's 10-point choice-based credit system, a commonly used grade scale is:
| Grade | Meaning | Grade points |
|---|---|---|
| O | Outstanding | 10 |
| A+ | Excellent | 9 |
| A | Very good | 8 |
| B+ | Good | 7 |
| B | Above average | 6 |
| C | Average | 5 |
| P | Pass | 4 |
| F | Fail | 0 |
Universities can adapt this scale, so check the grade table on your own marksheet. A failed subject usually counts as zero in that semester's SGPA until you clear it, and the revised grade then replaces it according to university rules.
Example: one semester
Say you have four subjects: 4 credits with an A+ (9), 4 credits with an A (8), 3 credits with a B+ (7) and 2 credits with an O (10). Grade points × credits = 36 + 32 + 21 + 20 = 109, over 13 credits. SGPA = 109 ÷ 13 = 8.38.
Common mistakes when converting
- Averaging SGPAs when credits differ. This can move your CGPA up or down by a few hundredths, enough to matter near a cut-off.
- Using the wrong percentage formula. Employers sometimes ask for a specific formula. Write which one you used.
- Rounding too early. Keep two or more decimals until the final step.
- Counting backlog semesters twice. Use the latest SGPA after a supplementary exam, as your university records it.
CGPA to percentage: which formula?
There is no single national formula. Use the one stated on your grade card or in your university's regulations.
| Formula | Commonly used by | CGPA 8.0 becomes |
|---|---|---|
| CGPA × 9.5 | CBSE (Class 10 CGPA era) and many institutions as an indicative rule | 76.0% |
| CGPA × 10 | AKTU and several universities | 80.0% |
| (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | Widely quoted for VTU | 72.5% |
| (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 | Some universities | 75.0% |
University formulas can change between regulations or schemes, so confirm with your exam cell. The framework for grading in higher education is set out by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
Planning a target CGPA
Enter your target CGPA and the credits still to come. The calculator works out the average SGPA you need over the remaining semesters. If the answer is above 10, the target is not reachable, and if it is below your current CGPA, you can relax a little. Placement cut-offs of 6.5, 7.0 or 7.5 are common, so this helps you see early how much room you have.
Indicative classes
Many universities award a class or division by CGPA, for example first class with distinction at 7.75 or above and first class at 6.75 or above under some schemes. These cut-offs vary, so the class shown by the calculator is indicative only.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA?
Multiply each semester's SGPA by its credits, add the results, and divide by the total credits. If all semesters have equal credits, a simple average gives the same answer.
Is CGPA the average of all SGPAs?
Only when every semester has the same credits. Otherwise CGPA is a credit-weighted average.
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
Use your university's formula. Common ones are CGPA × 9.5, CGPA × 10 and (CGPA − 0.75) × 10.
What percentage is 8 CGPA?
76% with the × 9.5 formula, 80% with × 10, and 72.5% with (CGPA − 0.75) × 10.
Where do I find semester credits?
Credits are printed on each semester's grade card or marksheet, usually as total credits registered or earned.
