CGPA Calculator Nigeria (5.0 Scale)

Calculate your semester GPA and cumulative CGPA the way Nigerian universities do: grade points multiplied by course credit units. Enter scores or letter grades, add your previous CGPA if you have one, and see your current class of degree and the GPA you need to reach your target.

Some universities use slightly different boundaries for D and E grades. If your handbook differs, use “Enter grades” mode. Your official CGPA is the one on your transcript.

The Nigerian 5-point grading scale

Most Nigerian universities follow the National Universities Commission (NUC) 5-point scale, where each score range has a letter grade and a grade point:

ScoreGradeGrade point
70 – 100A5
60 – 69B4
50 – 59C3
45 – 49D2
40 – 44E1
0 – 39F0

Some institutions adjust the D and E boundaries or do not award grade E. Always check your departmental handbook.

How GPA and CGPA are calculated

GPA = Σ (grade point × credit units) ÷ Σ credit units for the semester
CGPA = total quality points across all semesters ÷ total credit units registered

“Quality points” is simply grade point × units for each course. A 3-unit course with an A (5 points) gives 15 quality points; a 2-unit course with a C (3 points) gives 6.

Worked example

CourseUnitsGradeGPQuality points
MTH 1013A515
PHY 1013B412
CHM 1013C39
GST 1012A510
BIO 1012D24
Total1350

GPA = 50 ÷ 13 = 3.85, which is in the Second Class Upper range.

Adding a new semester to your CGPA

To update your CGPA, you need your previous CGPA and the total units it was based on. Multiply them to get your previous quality points, add this semester's quality points, then divide by all units. Example: a 3.40 CGPA over 96 units gives 326.4 points. Add a semester of 50 points over 13 units, and the new CGPA is 376.4 ÷ 109 = 3.45.

Class of degree

CGPAClass of degree
4.50 – 5.00First Class
3.50 – 4.49Second Class Upper (2:1)
2.40 – 3.49Second Class Lower (2:2)
1.50 – 2.39Third Class
1.00 – 1.49Pass

Many graduate jobs and postgraduate programmes ask for at least a Second Class Upper, so knowing early how far you are from 3.50 helps you plan.

How to raise your CGPA

  • Prioritise high-unit courses. An A in a 4-unit course adds twice the quality points of a 2-unit course.
  • Clear failed courses quickly. Carry-overs keep units in your total and drag the average down until passed.
  • Use the target feature each semester to see the GPA you need, rather than guessing.
  • Protect continuous assessment marks. Tests and assignments often make up a large part of the final score.

For official standards, see the National Universities Commission.

Carry-over courses and repeated courses

When you fail a course (grade F), its units usually stay in your total credit units even though it adds zero quality points. That is why a single failed 3-unit course can pull a CGPA down noticeably. When you retake and pass it, universities handle the result in different ways: some count both attempts, others replace the F with the new grade. Check your handbook, then enter the course the way your university records it. If both attempts count, add the course twice: once with F and once with the new grade.

Common CGPA mistakes

  • Averaging semester GPAs. Semesters with more units count for more, so a simple average of GPAs is usually wrong. Always use quality points and units.
  • Forgetting zero-point courses. Failed courses still count in the units total.
  • Rounding too early. Keep at least two decimals until the end. 3.495 is not the same as 3.50 for a 2:1 boundary.
  • Mixing scales. Do not combine a 4-point polytechnic result with a 5-point university result.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate CGPA in Nigeria?

Multiply each course's grade point by its credit units, add the results across all semesters, and divide by the total credit units.

What CGPA is a First Class in Nigeria?

4.50 to 5.00 on the 5-point scale.

What is a 2:1 in Nigeria?

Second Class Upper, a CGPA of 3.50 to 4.49.

What score is an A in Nigerian universities?

70 and above on the NUC scale, which earns 5 grade points.

Does this work for polytechnics?

Polytechnics commonly use a different 4-point system, so this 5-point calculator is designed for universities.
