How to see the word count in MS Word
- Look at the status bar at the bottom-left of the Word window. It shows the word count of the whole document as you type.
- Select a paragraph to see the count for just that part, shown as “X of Y words”.
- For full details, open the Review tab and click Word Count. You will see words, characters with and without spaces, paragraphs and lines.
If the count is missing from the status bar, right-click the status bar and tick Word Count. Microsoft explains these options on its show word count help page.
How to see the word count in Google Docs
- Open Tools → Word count, or press Ctrl + Shift + C (Cmd + Shift + C on Mac).
- Tick Display word count while typing to keep a live counter in the corner of the page.
- Select any text first to count only that section.
On a phone
In the Google Docs and Microsoft Word mobile apps, the word count is in the app menu, usually under the three-dot menu. WhatsApp and most notes apps do not show a word count, so paste the text into a document or an online counter instead.
With an online Urdu word counter
An online counter is handy when your Urdu text lives in a message, a form or a website editor rather than a document. A counter built for Urdu also shows details that Word and Docs do not, such as sentences ending in ۔ and ؟, separate Urdu and English word counts, aerab marks and your most repeated words.
Why your Urdu word count differs between tools
Small differences of a few words are normal. These are the usual reasons:
| Reason | Example | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Punctuation without spaces | چاول،دال | Some tools count one word, others two |
| Hidden characters | Zero-width spaces from copied web text | Can split or join words invisibly |
| Numbers and symbols | ۲۰۲۶, %, – | Counted as words by some tools only |
| Compound words | اس کا, کیونکہ | Written with or without a space |
Two simple habits make your count match across tools: use proper Urdu punctuation followed by a space, and clean text copied from websites before counting. The Urdu text cleaner removes hidden characters and fixes spacing in one step, and our guide to Urdu punctuation marks covers the spacing rules.
For translators and freelancers: agree with the client which count you will use, the source text or the translated text, and which tool. Urdu and English versions of the same content rarely have the same number of words.
How to write to an Urdu word limit
- Plan by paragraph. For a 500-word essay, an introduction of about 60 to 80 words, three body paragraphs of around 110 words each and a short conclusion is a practical shape.
- Over the limit? Cut repeated ideas first, then long linking phrases. Phrases like اس بات میں کوئی شک نہیں کہ can often go without losing meaning.
- Under the limit? Add an example, a reason or a short real-life detail rather than repeating the same point.
- Check repetition. The “most used words” panel in the Urdu word counter shows if you are leaning on the same word too often.
Writing your draft in Roman Urdu first? Convert it with the Roman Urdu to Urdu converter and then count the Urdu version, since that is the one you will submit. Our guide on how to type in Urdu also covers keyboard options.
Frequently asked questions
Does MS Word count Urdu words correctly?
Yes, Word counts Urdu words separated by spaces. Small differences from other tools usually come from punctuation without spaces, numbers or hidden characters.
How do I check word count in Google Docs?
Open Tools → Word count or press Ctrl + Shift + C. You can also turn on a live word count while typing.
Are aerab counted as letters?
Word and Docs include aerab in character counts. An Urdu-specific counter can show them separately so the letter count reflects only base letters.
Is “اس کا” one word or two?
It is written as two words with a space, so word counters count it as two.
How many pages is 1,000 Urdu words?
It depends on font, size and line spacing. Nastaliq at a comfortable size takes more space than Naskh, so check the page count in your own document settings.
